2017-2018 School Year Registration

2017-2018 School Year Registration
Here at McCarthy Teszler School we have been busy preparing for a great 2017-2018 school year. To prepare for the school start date of August 17, 2017, we will once again hold registration early.
On Thursday, July 27, 2017 from 8:00am -5:00pm we will hold paper registration at McCarthy Teszler School. On that day you will fill out all your paperwork for the upcoming school year so your attendance this day is very important. Along with student information sheets and your lunch forms, this early paperwork will allow our transportation department to verify addresses and will ensure that your student has bus transportation on the first day of school. Also on this day medical information will be collected to allow our nurses to be fully prepared to meet the medical needs of our students more efficiently. Please bring medications, new physician orders for medications to be given at school, new orders for diastat, asthma inhalers and epi-pens, (medication order form enclosed) and new feeding orders.
All registration paperwork will be available at the school on July 27th or you may print the documents by clicking Read More below and downloading a printable version and come with everything filled out so that the process will be quicker. Please note that you may receive notification from your home districts concerning an online registration process available for your student. This process will not transfer registration paperwork to our program so you will not need to complete that process.
We look forward to seeing all our parents on Thursday, July 27, 2017 as we begin the 2017-2018 school year.

Kindness Challenge 2017

Kindness Challenge 2017
During the week of January 16-January 20 our students and staff participated in The Great Kindness Challenge. The purpose of the challenge was to help us to create a culture of kindness, increase tolerance, unity, and respect, reduce bullying, empower students of all ages, create a positive change, and reduce stress.
We began the week with a student-led kick-off announcement on the public announcement speaker that was followed by the playing of the Kind Hearted-Hand song. Free compliment posters with tear-off strips for co-workers to give to each other to show kindness were posted in various places throughout the school and left in the teacher mailroom for anyone to take and use. A Kindness Matters Station was set up during various lunch times with arts and craft supplies for students and staff to take to create something and give to someone to show kindness. Additionally, downloadable activities were placed on our common drive for teachers to print for their students as well as available at the Kindness Matters Station and in the teacher mailroom. Furthermore, a Kindness Counts book by Bryan Smith was available in the teacher mailroom for teachers to check out to read to their students. Letters were sent home to parents the prior week to make parents aware so they can participate in their community. Lastly, a Kindness Tree with leaves was put on a bulletin board for all acts of kindness to be represented on a leaf. What an un-be-leaf-avable kind week!

“Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle
Room 213‘s Book Study for the month of January was the book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? The month’s daily activities focused on the vocabulary found in the book. The students also worked on sequencing skills. Our Speech Therapist, Joy Rogers, incorporated the book study with her speech sessions and with the assistance of the iPad, produced wonderful communication activities for the students. In addition to the iPad, voice output devices and picture symbols complemented the activities. We also used plush animals to represent the characters in the story. Our class loved the repetition of the book as well as the illustrations. We even illustrated our very own versions of the book. A fun and educational time was had with our January Book Study! Classroom Spotlight - Mrs. Sewell’s Class
Chrisitne Sewell, classroom teacher in the Teszler Division and LBSW, Denise Thomas of the Rehabilitative Behavioral Health Services have been working with the fourth and fifth graders on solving conflict. The students were given two activities so they could visualize how it is important to solve conflict. In the first, a “Tug of War,” the students acted as opponents to solve a conflict where they worked against each other. They were encouraged to solve a conflict like the second activity, pictured, where two students were tied with a rope and had to work together to get themselves loose. The rules they addressed in solving conflict were 1. Identify the problem. 2. Focus on the problem. 3. Attack the problem, not the person. 4. Listen with an open mind. 5. Treat the other person’s feelings with respect. 6. Take responsibility for your actions. Click Read More to see a photo of the class.

Hot Chocolate Fun from Miss Massa’s Class
Our class has been hard at work this month with a schedule packed full of Holiday activities! We have incorporated the Christmas Season into many areas of academic instruction, including Science, Math, and English. In science and math, the students worked on their counting and experiment skills with a hot chocolate unit. First, our class used marshmallows as manipulatives to practice counting, and made a “hot chocolate” mug out of the marshmallows. Then, the students had to sequence the steps of our science experiment to make hot cocoa. Our class had to carefully follow directions to finish our delicious drinks! After the students successfully completed the experiment, they tasted the hot cocoa and marshmallows. Students had to formulate their own opinion and choose whether or not they liked the drink. Our class really enjoyed these activities, and did a great job in improving on some math and science skills! Click Read More to see pictures from our Hot Chocolate Fun!!

Monarch Butterfly Sightings at MTS
Lately, we have been reading about the amazing migration of Monarch Butterflies in our News to You segments!
Some of these butterflies travel over 2000 miles to Mexico to find warm temperatures for the winter. They are beautiful insects that are bright orange and black in color. They are about four inches wide when their wings are spread. After reading about Monarch butterflies we were able to see some outside our classroom door, eating the flower nectar from bushes and hovering around. We think they were getting some good MTS nourishment before traveling the fifty miles that they average per day

Classroom Spotlight - Mrs. Hill’s Class

Classroom Spotlight - Mrs. Hill’s Class
Our class has had a great start to the new school year. Throughout September, we have been working on our Apple Unit in Science class. Our students have learned all kinds of things about apples, like: the different types of apples, the parts of an apple and the life cycle of an apple. We even went to Niven’s Apple farm to pick our own apples.
The firefighters were the first community helpers to visit our school. The students had so much fun exploring the fire truck and meeting the firemen.
Our class has really enjoyed our new Social Skills curriculum: Teach Town. So far we have learned important skills like: “Sit When the Teacher Says”, “Listen When the Teacher Talks”, “Be Still and Quiet in Line”, “Use a Quiet Voice Inside”, “Follow Fire Drill Instructions” and “Take Deep Breaths to Stay Calm”. Our students are already improving with many of these skills.
After we finish our Apple Unit, we will begin our Pumpkin Unit, which will end with a field trip to Strawberry Hill to pick pumpkins. We are so excited about fall and are enjoying the beautiful weather outside.

The Big Red Barn

The Big Red Barn
The Green Hall’s Big Red Barn
During the month of September, the Elementary Classes on the Green Hall, McNeely, Griffith, Oyugi and Huskey, are studying the book “The Big Red Barn” by Margaret Wise Brown. All four classes contributed artistically to create a Green Hall version of “The Big Red Barn.” Our art teacher, Mrs. Hammond, painted a Big Red Barn and the students in the four classes made pigs, cows, roosters, baby chicks, sheep, lambs, horses and ducks to complete the farm scene. There is even a scarecrow for all to enjoy! The students used different mediums to produce the farm animals: cotton balls, paint, crayons, ribbon, hay and feathers are just a few. We hope our school friends will stop by and visit our “Big Red Barn.”
